[00:02:25] Ryan Power: Thanks for having me, Alex. Pleased to be here. Yeah.
[00:02:27] Alex Bélisle-Springer: Listen, the last time we had you on PhorestFM must’ve been, I want to say probably close to five years at this point.
[00:02:34] Ryan Power: I, I, I want to agree. Yeah. I,
[00:02:36] Alex Bélisle-Springer: I- And it was, uh… And it was an episode that really, really resonated with people. It was one of the most, like, top favorites, and still, I think is in our top 10 all time.
[00:02:45] Ryan Power: Awesome. Yeah. It w- it was about five years, ’cause it was, it was five years ago that I was at the last summit.
[00:02:52] Alex Bélisle-Springer: Wow.
[00:02:53] Ryan Power: Um, ’cause that was 2020, just before the world- Oh, no … shut down. Yeah. Literally, like, six weeks before.
[00:02:59] Alex Bélisle-Springer: Wow.
[00:02:59] Ryan Power: Um, so yeah, thrilled to, thrilled to be back here again. Yeah.
[00:03:03] Alex Bélisle-Springer: So five years. So 2020, 2025 event.
Yeah. Do you feel like there’s a different energy that’s, like, new to you and you’re like, “Oh, this is exciting. This is cool”?
[00:03:12] Ryan Power: Well, I think that Phorest has always had a pretty unique energy in that respect. At the events they’ve always been something which people hugely look forward to.
[00:03:21] Alex Bélisle-Springer: Mm.
[00:03:21] Ryan Power: It… Within our community, we’ve got like a, a, a Phorest sub-community, as it were-
of people that are, that are all Phorest, uh, that sell on, um, uh, subscribers, if you like, cl- customers, and they all look forward to this event so much. They come every year- Yeah … without fail, and they all meet up every year. And I think it’s a huge thing as part of that calendar, and I think that the fact that so much great content and so forth is shared as well, for many people, actually, that’s a bonus.
Mm. Because it’s just as much about, right, uh, you know, when you’re a business owner, it’s lonely. You know? Yeah. It is a lonely, lonely job being a business. Even if you’ve got a big team, it’s still lonely because your staff don’t really understand the [00:04:00] pressures that are on you and, and what you’re going through.
Yeah. So to be in an environment where you can be around several hundred other people who just get it- Yeah … and understand what you’re going through, and you can release a little bit of steam out of your proverbial ears- … without anyone judging you- Yeah … then I think that all, uh, rolls into what makes a brilliant event.
Um, and yeah- Mm … I’m thrilled that I was, uh, invited to come and be a part of it again. Mm. Yeah, it’s been, it’s been a memorable one, for sure.
[00:04:27] Alex Bélisle-Springer: I feel like you have, you know, with your own coaching business, a lot of the same- Like, you know, big loyal fan base. Like people- Yeah … who are really, really, like, attached to the brand, to you, to, you know- Yeah
everything that you put out.
[00:04:43] Ryan Power: Well, I think you’re right. And, um, you know, we are super grateful for that. And funnily enough, uh, g- going back to, um, what we’ve mentioned where it was five years ago. Mm-hmm. Actually, a lot of that exploded as a result of everything that happened in 2020 and 2021.
[00:04:59] Alex Bélisle-Springer: Yeah.
[00:04:59] Ryan Power: Um, [00:05:00] because one of the things that Holly and I did when the world shut down is we went, “Right, we’re just gonna…
We’re gonna go live every day-
[00:05:06] Greg Clarke: Mm …
[00:05:07] Ryan Power: um, for as long as people can’t open,” thinking that that might have been for two weeks- … or for three weeks. And it ended up- Little did you know … 135 days straight we did, going live every single … Just talking about nothing really. Wow. Just, just to give people a bit of, I don’t know really, stability, I guess, more than anything, where they could just come and sit and watch for half an hour in the mornings.
Mm. And as a result of that, uh, which we didn’t realize when we went into it, but as a result of that, we then grew, uh, this huge community of people that all just felt connected together, you know? Yeah. And, um, mercifully, uh, they’ve all hung around. Now the world has gone back together- … which has been amazing.
And, and as you say, I think that we are very, uh, yeah, very well-aligned with Phorest in that respect. Mm. Because for our business, yeah, community is a, is a huge part of it. Yeah. And I think that’s true for Phorest as well, you know?
[00:05:59] Alex Bélisle-Springer: Absolutely.
[00:05:59] Ryan Power: Because [00:06:00] ultimately, if you, if you don’t have that, then, um, well, A, it’s not as much fun, but I’m not sure what you necessarily do have, you know?
I mean, there’s lots of other salon softwares, as we all know. Mm-hmm. But none of them do anything like this. None of them, I don’t think, their clients would say they feel- Mm … in the same way that, that Phorest clients feel about them.
[00:06:20] Alex Bélisle-Springer: Yeah, yeah,
[00:06:20] Ryan Power: yeah. Which, you know, I don’t think that’s necessarily been, um, designed for commercial purposes.
That’s just a huge extra nice benefit for the company. Yeah. It’s actually, let’s do this, because it’s a great thing to them- people to be a part of, and a way for them to connect. Yeah. And I mean, you just have to look around. You just, you know, you can sense it when you c- Some events, you know, I go to a lot of events.
Yeah. Not just for our industry. For all sorts of o- other ones as well. And some events just, they just hit different. Mm-hmm. They feel different.
[00:06:48] Alex Bélisle-Springer: Yeah.
[00:06:48] Ryan Power: And this event is definitely one of those. It’s one of those ones where you could come knowing no one, and you could leave with a dozen f- friends, you know?
Mm. And f- somehow good friends. [00:07:00] Not just … Y- you know what I mean? Not just, “Oh, I-”
[00:07:01] Alex Bélisle-Springer: Friends for life kind of vibe.
[00:07:02] Ryan Power: Yeah. Yeah. Exactly, yeah. Yeah. 100%. And I think that, um, and I think our industry needs more of that. Mm. ‘Cause actually, there aren’t really very many. Not in the UK anyway. Mm. There aren’t many good industry events.
And the, like, the big trade shows, um, I, I feel like a lot of people- Don’t get as much out of them as they once did. So I think we’re reliant on stuff like this weekend to- Yeah … bring everyone together. And the fact that we can wrap it all up in a awesome, welcoming city like Dublin, which has its own special
[00:07:36] Alex Bélisle-Springer: vibe.
Yeah, its own special spice to it,
[00:07:37] Ryan Power: yeah. Oh, it really does. I mean, I just- Yeah … don’t, I don’t feel like it would quite be the same if it was somewhere else, you know? Mm-hmm, yeah. Because it re- it, it, it really does add to it because you’re just right in the heart of everything here.
[00:07:47] Alex Bélisle-Springer: Yeah.
[00:07:47] Ryan Power: And, um, yeah, it’s been a lot of fun this weekend.
Yeah, I’ve really enjoyed it.
[00:07:51] Alex Bélisle-Springer: So tell me a bit about the workshop you were giving. Yeah. The reception from, like, people- … uh, you know, what you were hoping to, you know, [00:08:00] for people to leave with, I guess-
[00:08:01] Ryan Power: Yeah …
[00:08:01] Alex Bélisle-Springer: and how that landed.
[00:08:02] Ryan Power: So, so, so it was a little bit, um, different this time, and in fact, I was a little bit, uh, nervous because I was talking about something I don’t normally talk about.
Normally with Salonology, I’m normally talking marketing and just business growth.
[00:08:14] Alex Bélisle-Springer: Yeah.
[00:08:14] Ryan Power: But the team, um, suggested that they would like me to talk about something a little bit different, and also to, um, tie in with the whole, uh, Elevate theme for- Yep … this year. So I wanted to do something that was a bit more inspirational, a bit more motivational.
Um, so the presentation was called Unstoppable in 2025: How to Have a Breakthrough Year Personally and Professionally. Hmm. So it was very much working on the basis of how you can design your business so that it supports your best possible life, and just how you can live your best possible life. Yeah. You know?
Um, because it’s easy to get stuck on that hamster wheel. It’s easy just to get involved with the daily rigmarole and kind of- feel like every year you’re living is just the same as the previous one.
[00:08:58] Alex Bélisle-Springer: Yeah.
[00:08:58] Ryan Power: And I think there’s more, maybe [00:09:00] as you get older- … you realize that maybe there’s more to it. Um, and therefore, uh, a lot of that kind of, um, overlapped into it.
So I was excited to, to do that. And then, um, we had such a, so many people turn up for the workshop here that we then had to move to a bigger room. I saw that. So that was, that was pretty cool. There was a lot of commotion. I was like, “
[00:09:17] Alex Bélisle-Springer: What’s happening
[00:09:18] Ryan Power: here?” There was a lot of commotion, wasn’t there? I know, and I had to get my ego in check for a minute-
’cause I was like, “Oh, my God, we’ve, we’ve exploded the room. We’ve seeped out the sides.” So everyone then had to march back off to a different location, which was awesome. I wasn’t expecting that. So that was, that was really, really cool. So great. And, um, I think it went down all right. I mean, I had to sort of condense everything a little bit, which was a little bit of a challenge, but I feel like I got the general message across okay.
And, um, as we were speaking about just before we, we went on the air, as it were, um, you know, these people are listening at the end of day two. Mm-hmm. And it’s, you know, it’s, when you’re, when you’re sat at a conference as an attendee listening for two hours, sat on your backside- Yeah … you know, it’s, it, [00:10:00] it sounds silly to say it’s tiring, but- But it is
but it kind of is, isn’t it? Yeah, yeah. Yeah, you know? So, um, so it’s a, so it’s an additional level of challenge to try and keep people- Yeah … engaged and, um, listening and making sure they don’t just slide down their seat and drop off after- Yeah … a, after a large lunch, you know? So, uh, I’m hopeful that I achieved that.
[00:10:20] Alex Bélisle-Springer: I, I have full confidence.
[00:10:22] Ryan Power: Awesome. Well, I appreciate that.
[00:10:24] Alex Bélisle-Springer: So tell me a bit more about, like, you know, what you’ve been up to in the last- Yeah … few years at this point. I know it’s a loaded question ’cause we’re talking years and not weeks, you
[00:10:32] Ryan Power: know? But- Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Well, you know, business-wise, everything has very much gone from, um, from strength to strength.
So, um, we, uh, Holly and I are still running Salinology. We, um, predominantly via our Gold Club group coaching program. We’ve got almost 400 members of that now. Amazing. So that has really grown since we spoke last. I mean, we probably had about 100 then maybe. I don’t know. Something like that. Um, and that just continues to grow, and again, probably for [00:11:00] very similar reasons that we were just speaking about with, with, with- Yeah
Phorest, you know? I really feel like people just, they buy into the whole community more than… It’s not even really us that they’re buying. It’s the bigger, you know, it’s the bigger picture. The bigger picture, yeah. It’s much bigger than, than Holly and I really. Um, so everything has been going really, really well on, on, on that front.
And, um, yeah, business has been growing. And, um, I’ve been on a personal mission for the last kind of 18 months or so, um, whereby I’ve created a big old bucket list of things- Oh … I wanna do. Okay. Of 100 things.
[00:11:30] Alex Bélisle-Springer: 100 things.
[00:11:31] Ryan Power: 100 things.
[00:11:31] Alex Bélisle-Springer: Okay.
[00:11:32] Ryan Power: And I’m on a mission to do at least one every month.
[00:11:35] Alex Bélisle-Springer: How do you go about deciding what the 100…
Like, how- Well, good question … one thing would, like, land on the 100 list?
[00:11:40] Ryan Power: Yeah. So, uh, really just- One of the things about it is that it’s about having, like, a balance. So it can’t just be, “I want a Ferrari, I want a Porsche, I want a mansion.” Right. Because that’s, A, ridiculous, and B, you’re just gonna run out of money right away, right?
Right. So it’s about having a balance of things you wanna do. Some of it’s really stupid things, but just things I’ve always wanted to do. [00:12:00] Right. You know, a lot of things, like, from my childhood, which maybe I- Give me an example. Okay. Well, for an example, one of the things I really want to do is I really wanted to go to Legoland, where I went recently, right?
I really, really wanted to, um, go up a lighthouse just ’cause I’ve never done it before. I really wanna meet someone else called Ryan Power, and I know that sounds stupid, but just ’cause I never have.
[00:12:18] Alex Bélisle-Springer: Have you found someone?
[00:12:19] Ryan Power: Not yet. Okay. No, not yet, but I’m in the right country to do so, I think. Yeah. So yeah, I might tonight.
Who knows? Yes. Who knows? Now I’ve put it out there into the universe.
[00:12:28] Alex Bélisle-Springer: And also on the podcast. Yeah. You just- Maybe it’ll land right
[00:12:31] Ryan Power: in the right … You just never, you just never know. Yeah. So yeah, doing all the… So, so doing, um, yeah, doing the stuff that everyone thinks of. You know, we all wanna go and walk the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu and all those sorts of things.
Right. But it’s also, yeah, about doing some of the, um, the smaller stuff as well, and really just having that kind of appreciation, I think, for life and, and that gratitude for it as well of like, oh, we’re just so privileged to be able to, to go and do, within reason, pretty much anything that we wanna do in the Western [00:13:00] world, right?
Mm. You know? Mm-hmm. It’s so, so… And, and again, I think that it’s so easy to almost have, like, a Groundhog Day life, where you literally just do- Yeah … the same year, the same year over and over and over and over and over again, uh, not just in business, but personal life as well. Yeah. You know? So many people, they go on holiday to the same place every year, the same hotel.
Not, not just the same country- … the same flipping hotel.
[00:13:24] Ryan Power: And just over and over and over. And we are so… You know, we get stuck into these routines, you know, as human beings. Yeah. So I feel like challenging some of that is a worthwhile exercise for us all. Mm. Um, and just getting a bit more excited about life, you know?
And, and from a business perspective, mixing those things up so that we don’t just have that plateau which so many businesses fall into. Yeah. You know? And again, it’s doing the same things in business and, and, and you get to a point where you grow a little bit, and then it just flattens out.
[00:13:55] Alex Bélisle-Springer: Yeah.
[00:13:56] Ryan Power: And you need to change up what you’re doing to break [00:14:00] through that, to continue to grow, you know?
But as well as that, also thinking about what it is you really wanna do.
[00:14:06] Alex Bélisle-Springer: Mm.
[00:14:06] Ryan Power: You know? A lot of people are chasing after someone else’s- version of success or someone else’s definition of it, you know? Yeah. And especially nowadays, it’s so easy to go on social media and you see all these people shouting at you that, “If you’re not doing a five-figure month, you know, you’re a failure- Yeah
and you should be in Dubai all the time, you know, in your bikini,” and all that nonsense. And a lot of people buy into that- Yeah … even if it’s not what they even want. Not aligned.
[00:14:33] Alex Bélisle-Springer: Yeah.
[00:14:33] Ryan Power: Exactly. Yeah. So, and I think a lot of us don’t actually take the time to really think, “Right. What, what is it I actually want?”
You know? Yeah. “What is it I want in life? Right. It’s that. Okay. Well, let’s make a plan. Let’s go and do it.” Because for most of us, the only thing that’s really stopping us doing it is ourselves, you know?
[00:14:50] Alex Bélisle-Springer: Mm-hmm. It’s really interesting because the, what you’re saying there reminds me of what’s been coming out from many, many of the talks over the weekend.
Mm-hmm. Yeah. And I don’t know how many of you you’ve [00:15:00] been a- able to attend, but- Not
[00:15:01] Ryan Power: as many as I would have liked, but yeah.
[00:15:02] Alex Bélisle-Springer: Yeah. But, like, th- I feel like the, there’s something, there’s a recurrent, like, theme this year of people sharing, you know, you’ve, you’ve got to look in- inwards. Yes. You’ve got to start to get to know who you actually really are-
[00:15:16] Ryan Power: 100%
[00:15:16] Alex Bélisle-Springer: to be able to then also, what, what, what you’re saying, know what you want- Yeah … but also be able to, I don’t know, provide a great customer experience or relate- Yeah … to the client or, like, actually create a v- like, a deep bond. Um- Yeah … but it really has to start with your- Yeah … own, like, introspective- 100%
journey.
[00:15:35] Ryan Power: Whoo. Yeah, you’re
[00:15:36] Alex Bélisle-Springer: absolutely- It is Monday night.
[00:15:39] Ryan Power: You are absolutely spot on, though. And, and, and it is about looking inward, and I think that the majority of us look outward because that’s easier. Mm-hmm. Right? It’s just much, much easier. Yeah. And, you know, it’s that classic where sometimes you actually just have to do that, I believe they call it difficult inner work- Yes
I think is what they like to say. And, you know, it’s literally just about- Thinking, and actually really [00:16:00] thinking. And a lot of people don’t like to do too much-
[00:16:02] Alex Bélisle-Springer: Yeah …
[00:16:02] Ryan Power: quiet thinking times. Yeah. You know, we’re so quick to, you know, how many time, when was the last time you sat in a room, but just a quiet room on your own?
Something that most people are terrified to do.
[00:16:12] Alex Bélisle-Springer: And you know why I think? Well, my, this is my theory: because we’re terrified to feel what- Right … will come up.
[00:16:17] Ryan Power: Yeah, scared of what might come
[00:16:18] Alex Bélisle-Springer: out. Like physically also-
[00:16:19] Ryan Power: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah … you know, the
[00:16:20] Alex Bélisle-Springer: feelings.
[00:16:21] Ryan Power: Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. So even then it’s like, “All right, well, I’ve got to put the TV on, I’ve got to put some music on, I’ve got to do some- gotta s- gotta fill that silence- Mm-hmm
somehow.” And it’s like, well, actually, maybe a bit of that silence is, is a good thing.
[00:16:31] Alex Bélisle-Springer: Yeah.
[00:16:32] Ryan Power: And, you know, ask yourself some of those difficult questions, because- Yeah … on the other side of it is actually a more fulfilling life, you know? Yeah. A more fulfilling setup. So I think that, yeah, challenging. So, and again, I, I guess that some of that just happens, yeah, as you get a little bit older, as, as I suppose, right?
[00:16:48] Alex Bélisle-Springer: Yeah. ‘
[00:16:48] Ryan Power: Cause we all change, you know, and things- Yep … you know, and everything changes, and, um, nothing really stays the same. So I think that it’s, um, it’s really key to, to kind of embrace some of that.
[00:16:58] Alex Bélisle-Springer: Yeah, absolutely. [00:17:00] Well, I think that, you know, from what I’ve known or seen anyways from following you in the last few years on social- Yeah
I think you’ve definitely been on that kind of journey yourself.
[00:17:09] Ryan Power: 100%, yeah.
[00:17:10] Alex Bélisle-Springer: And I really applaud you for that. Thank you. It is not always easy, and I’m sure there has been moments where, you know, you’re like, “Man, this is rough.”
[00:17:18] Ryan Power: Yeah. Well, right back at you. But,
[00:17:20] Alex Bélisle-Springer: yeah. Yeah, yeah. But I appreciate, I appreciate, you know, reconnecting.
I appreciate- Like always, yes … like you, you are glowing. So I, I’m only assuming that it’s brought you a lot of joy, so I’m, I’m really happy for you. And
[00:17:31] Ryan Power: continues to, yeah, absolutely. And, um, and also I think that, you know, we could, uh, we all could do with a bit more of that in our lives, right?
[00:17:38] Alex Bélisle-Springer: Yeah.
[00:17:38] Ryan Power: So I’m definitely all in favor of spreading as much of that as I can, even if it annoys people.
[00:17:44] Alex Bélisle-Springer: Well, if it an- if it annoys people, you know, to see someone else’s joy from, like, the hard inner work-
[00:17:50] Ryan Power: Yeah …
[00:17:51] Alex Bélisle-Springer: maybe that’s reflective of something else. Probably missing in them.
[00:17:54] Ryan Power: Yeah. Yeah, 100%. Couldn’t agree more.
[00:17:56] Alex Bélisle-Springer: But, um, listen, we’ll, we’ll close with this. Um, the [00:18:00] summit this year has the theme Elevate. What’s your personal and also business theme for the year?
[00:18:07] Ryan Power: Um, I think that, um, I think that my, well, to tie in with the, the, the, the presentation that I just gave, it is all about being unstoppable in 2025. Mm. You know? And your own version of that. And working out what that means to you, and working out what that personal and professional success looks like for the year.
Yeah. Because I made this point when I was on the stage, you know, it, it is different for everyone. Mm-hmm. And it’s really important that we don’t chase someone else’s dreams. You know, for some people, success might just be picking up the kids from school every day, ’cause a lot of people don’t get to do that.
That’s true. You know? Yeah. So if that’s what you wanna do, then figure out how you can make that happen in your own life. So I think that’s definitely what I’ve been trying to do for mine, and I hope that I’ve encouraged and inspired some others to do the same as well.
[00:18:50] Alex Bélisle-Springer: I’m sure you have. Thanks so much for being with
[00:18:53] Ryan Power: us.
Thank you for having me. Always, Alex, yeah, I’ve loved it.
[00:18:57] Kelly Shaw: My name’s Kelly Shaw. I’m the owner [00:19:00] of K’s Bar down in Hampshire, and I also work as a salon business coach.
[00:19:04] Alex Bélisle-Springer: For anyone listening to the podcast, they will have recognized your name. We re-ran an episode that we featured you on last year. What keeps you coming back to the summit? Because you come back-
[00:19:14] Kelly Shaw: Since 2016, I’ve not missed one, and I love the connections that you make.
I love that you meet up with different salon owners from around the world, the country, and each year you see each other. What you learn, um, from all of the amazing speakers, and just the Phorest team as well, you really feel part of the family.
[00:19:34] Rowena Yaeger: Rowena Yaeger from Studio Wish Salon in Twinsburg, Ohio.
[00:19:39] Alex Bélisle-Springer: Nice to see you again.
It’s always a pleasure. This year the summit has a theme… Well, we always have a theme, but this year the theme is elevate.
[00:19:46] Rowena Yaeger: Mm.
[00:19:47] Alex Bélisle-Springer: I’m curious to hear what your theme for the year is for the salon, for you personally, maybe both.
